Redevelopment plans for Watford Colosseum appproved
Planning permission has been granted for the redevelopment of Watford Colosseum.
An application for significant additions to the listed building to form a new main entrance and foyer, together with a major internal refurbishment of the building, was passed after recommendation by Watford Borough Council’s planning team.
The government’s historic environment adviser, English Heritage, was also consulted as part of the application. The organisation agreed that the reasoning for doing the work was ‘readily understood’, and commented that the juxtaposition between the neo-Georgian façade and the new modern extension was acceptable, but recommended that further thought be given to the colour of the brick and glazing.
Watford mayor Dorothy Thornhill, said: “Residents are very clear about wanting to see the Colosseum restored to its former glory. They want a venue that will put Watford on the map, and a first class all-purpose entertainment centre for everyone. The unique character of the building and its world-renowned acoustics will be preserved, but with much needed improvements to customer facilities, seating and lighting.”
The application was approved on condition that further details of the external materials are referred to the committee. The application for listed building consent has now been sent to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, and a decision is expected in about a month.
David Noble, development management section head at Watford Borough Council said: “These proposals will enhance the existing venue and provide a significantly improved visitor experience. The proposals respect the architectural and historic character of the listed building both externally and internally and will preserve the character and appearance of the (Civic Core) conservation area.”
The plans for the redevelopment are currently on display in the foyer of the Colosseum.
