County council sign up to 10:10 energy project

Posted by news desk in Local News, 26th February 2010, 9:46am

Hertfordshire County Council has set a target to reduce emissions from property, transport and street lighting by 25 per cent by 2013, and has signed up to the national 10:10 energy-saving campaign, the project to unite every sector of British society to achieve a 10 per cent cut in the UK’s carbon emissions during 2010.

Two of the main focal points of the campaign are encouraging personal responsibility for energy use and thinking carefully about business mileage.

According to the council, campaigns encouraging staff to save energy by switching off lights and electronic equipment when not in use, are already in place.

Derrick Ashley, executive member for environment at the county council, said: "More than 50,000 people and 100 councils have backed the 10:10 campaign to help tackle climate change. The idea is simple; by working together we can achieve a 10 per cent cut in the UK’s carbon emissions in 2010. The 10:10 proposals fit in with our own ambitious plans so we're happy to add our voice to this national campaign."
