Waste not, want not
Making the most of money is at the top of most people’s agenda at the moment and you can do this without compromising on a healthy diet. As a nation we throw away a staggering 6.7m tonnes of food every year, that’s £10 billion worth of leftovers.
The most thrown away food is fruit and vegetables and yet studies show that only 12 per cent of us are achieving our five a day.
Fruit and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and are an essential part of a heart healthy diet. So use up your fruit and don’t let those vegetables go rotten, here are some tips to help you reduce waste and save money:
• Don’t throw away wrinkly tomatoes and old onions, chop them up and sauté them, add some garlic and herbs and you have a delicious home made pasta sauce.
• Keep and eye on what’s getting past it’s best and learn to use it up by adding to whatever dish you’re cooking. Apples can be sliced and cooked in parcels with pork steaks, do the same with oranges to add a zing to chicken.
• Chop up remnants of root vegetables lurking in the bottom of the larder and roast them with rapeseed oil, don’t worry if the skins are looking a bit old, as long as they’re not mouldy, these can be removed.
Reducing food waste is good for your pocket, good for the environment and can help you to reach your five a day, keeping you and your heart healthy.
